Sam Birt is a collage artist working with magazines and books to create abstract compositions that are visually captivating, intriguing and thought provoking. Her work has two points of access: from afar they are full of colour and light, brought together with a strong sense of movement and playful dynamics which guides the observers eye through both familiar and unfamiliar landscapes of cities and dreamscapes from the past, the present and future.
Then you get close and a whole new world is revealed. Fragments of our lives are torn, cut and then pieced together in unexpected unison creating a whole new world of meaning. Sam say’s that the process of making collages echos how we live our lives, constantly selecting, absorbing, rejecting, and then assembling our daily experiences as a way of making sense of it all.
This is what the viewer encounters or experiences when exploring Sam’s work. Each piece depicts something that we know, an essence of the complexities of our lives and how everything is constantly and continuously moving together and apart. We are held in a moment of suspension in time and space, each collage offering a glimpses of meaning, a sense of beauty and harmony, a sense of belonging and cohesion.
Sam Birt is a collage artist, video maker, choreographer and dancer. She is originally from London, but has a diverse cultural background with roots in India, Canada and various European countries. She has lived and worked in several cities around Europe and now is currently based in Lake Como, Italy.
